Made significant contributions to magnetohydrodynamics, and especially dynamo theory. Collaborated in the first integration of a three-dimensional geodynamo to exhibit spontaneous irregular polarity reversals like the Earth's magnetic field. Added to understanding of sonoluminescence and superfluid flow, and to the dynamics of the inhomogeneous solidification of alloys.
