University of California, Berkeley, Berkeley, California ~Professor of Chemistry, Materials Science, and Engineering. Research in the field of semiconductor nanowire science and technology. Studies the use of semiconductor nanowires in photonics, energy conversion, and nanofluidics applications. Contributed to the rational synthesis and assembly of semiconductor nanowires and their heterostructures. Carried out the first in situ transmission electron microscopy observation of nanowire growth via the vapor-liquid-solid method, a process that has been extensively used within the nanowire research community. Discovered UV/blue light lasing, subwavelength waveguiding, and nonlinear optical mixing in semiconductor nanowires. Research stimulated work in nanowire-based optoelectronics, laying the foundation for nanowires-based subwavelength photonic integration as well as novel nanowire scanning probe imaging and spectroscopy. In the photovoltaic area, introduced the idea of the nanowire solar cell. Current work devoted to developing solar-to-fuels artificial photosynthetic technology based on nanostructured semiconductors.~
