Sterling Professor of Chemistry, Emeritus (Yale University).  With D.M. Engelman, he developed and used new neutron scattering procedures to explore the quarternary structure of the small ribosomal subunit. He was also involved in the determination of RNA structures by NMR.  From the mid-1990s until the time of his retirement (2010), he collaborated with T.A. Steitz on X-ray crystallographic studies of the the ribosome and the antibiotics that interact with it.  He remains active in the areas of ribosome structure and function, and in structure determination more generally.
