Broad vision, painstaking and imaginative research, and command of diverse languages allow him to reinterpret the history of early modern China. His China Marches West (2005) examines the expansion of the Qing empire into inner Asia and its relationship to frontier studies, environmental history, and global imperialism. He has also published three edited volumes on inter-Asian relations, and a series of lectures in Chinese on environmental history.
