Eugene Higgins Professor of Immunobiology, Professor of Cell Biology and Dermatology; Investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Elucidated molecular steps required for antigens to trigger an immune response by T cells. Research revealed intricate assembly and intracellular transport of major histocompatibility complex molecules, and demonstrated how antigens lodge within these molecules for T cell recognition. Focusing on mechanistic aspects of immune response, studies extend over a gamut of responses and interactions mediated by major histocompatibility complex, including responses to viruses (such as adenovirus and influenza) and to bacteria (such as Staphylococci and Listeria).
