Important historian of modern Britain and a major figure concerned with the future of the humanities in Britain. In his first two books he examined aristocratic British society with discussions of its ability to adapt to a changing society. Then, he turned to even broader themes in his two more recent studies, notably of that vexed issue: national character. Broader still is his book on Margaret Mead which examines the ways that modern social science shaped the present world. All of his work is based on deep archival investigation. In his numerous articles and reviews he wrote with great insight on a wide range of subjects. President of the Royal Historical Society who also serves on the editorial board of Historical Journal, Modern Intellectual History, Journal of British Studies, and Virtus: Yearbook for the Study of the Nobility in Europe.
