A key figure in Cenozoic vertebrate paleontology and evolutionary biology. During his career, he has led many expeditions with colleagues from Pakistan, Egypt, and Morocco, mentored an outstanding group of Master's and Ph.D. students, directed one of the most active paleontology programs in the country, and published over 250 papers and book-length monographs. Research is focused on the Paleocene-Eocene geological epoch boundary, on greenhouse warming during the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum (PETM), on the origin and early evolution of whales, and on rates of evolution.
