Pierre-André Chiappori has developed fundamental results on household behavior, risk, insurance and contract theory, general equilibrium and mathematical economics.  His work has provided theoretical foundations and empirical analysis of, among others, individual behavior within the family, incomplete information in contracts, and optimality of equilibrium in markets. The conclusions implied by his works have had important implications regarding labor supply of members in a family, investment in the human capital of children, matching mechanisms, and the design of contracts.  His work has provided methods to evaluate the effect on the welfare of individuals that inequality, incomplete information, and/or unobserved heterogeneity generate.
