Research focuses on the philosophy and methodology of the social sciences, history of sociology and contemporary sociological theory. During the last decade he has been concerned with the mechanisms of major social change, and particularly the role of cultural factors in societal transformations. Recent books introduce innovative concepts of social becoming, civilizational competence, trust cultures and cultural trauma, applied particularly to the transformations in East-Central Europe after the collapse of communism.
