Maude and Lillian Presley Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Harvard Medical School.
Research focuses on mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis. He has elucidated the structures and molecular mechanisms of action of toxic proteins that are responsible for the symptoms of bacterial diseases. His work on diptheria toxin has helped make this toxin a paradigm in the field. His current research is focused on the question of how toxins translocate their enzymic components across membranes.
