Green's work focuses on defining the molecular mechanisms of protein synthesis using biochemical and genome-wide approaches. These studies have led to fundamental insights into the core activities of the RNAdriven molecular machine called the ribosome and thus into the earliest evolution of life. Her work has more recently focused on quality control events during protein synthesis, and in particular, how the ribosome is a central player in determining the fate of an mRNA based on its coding potential - these pathways are broadly referred to as "mRNA surveillance" and are critical for our understanding of a wide range of human diseases.
