Weissleder's research centers on new diagnostic technologies to elucidate human biology, which have enabled wide expansion of molecular imaging and diagnostics. He developed magnetic nanoparticle technology for cancer staging, micro-NMR sensing devices for cancer cell analysis, micro-Hall magnetic sensors, micro-plasmon resonance and multiple chemical sensors. His technology has allowed new quantitative insights into drug actions and patient responses in clinical trials. He has written over 750 publications for peer-reviewed journals, which have garnered numerous honors, notably the Millennium Pharmaceuticals Innovator Award in 2003, the 2008 RNSA Outstanding researcher award, and the 2011 European Society of Radiology Gold Medal.
