Expertise is in planetary dynamics. Theorized that the peculiar orbit of Pluto was the result of orbital migration of Neptune and that this could result from migration of the Jovian planets during the late stages of planetary accretion. Developed the implications of migration of the Jovian planets as it affects the Kuiper belt, the asteroid belt and the bombardment history of the planets, major steps forward in understanding the evolution of small bodies in our solar system. This has led to a new view of the formation and evolution of the Solar system and other planetary systems.
