Baraniuk is a multi-faceted researcher who has made numerous contributions to statistical signal processing at the interface between mathematics and engineering, in particular compressive sensing for realizing new kinds of signal processing algorithms and sensors. His work is highly cited, resulted in a large number of patents, and is being commercialized by industry. He has received many awards for his research, including the IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Achievement Award and the IEEE James H. Mulligan, Jr. Education Medal. Simultaneously, he is a founder and leader of the open education movement through his OpenStax initiative that has saved US college students more than $1.2 billion to date.
