Research has involved the cytogenetics of interspecific hybridization in goldenrods, including the inheritance of the photoperiodic response; also the morphogenesis of plants, including the discovery and identification of growth inhibitors and a detailed analysis of root growth. He has initiated long-range vegetation studies and investigated the ecological effects of prescribed burning. He has been active in the preservation of biodiversity as president and board member of The Nature Conservancy in its formative years and as founder and president of the Conservation and Research Foundation.
