Working mainly on pre-Reformation Europe, explored the complex interaction of elite and popular (clerical and lay) culture; the relationship between religious ideas and ordinary experience; and the conditions leading to repression of dissent and deviance. Most recently, proposed a new analytical framework for interpreting religious architecture.
