Author of Distant Cycles: Schubert and Conceiving of Song, (winner of Kinkeldey Award for best book of the year, American Musicological Society, and ASCAP Deems Taylor Prize), editor of a reconstructed Beethoven sketchbook (Bonn, 1996), and important essays on Beethoven (sketches, education), Schubert and Emanuel Bach. His work represents a unique confluence of hard scholarship and advanced criticism; not too widely published, but an unusually distinguished mind.
