Brettell made important contributions to every aspect of art history. As a curator and museum director, he mounted major exhibitions and been at the forefront of integrating art museums with universities. As the founding director of a research center, he inspired theory-driven innovations in the study of art. And as a scholar, he made formidable contributions to Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting, in particular, to the work of Paul Gauguin.
