                    Shiff is an internationally-recognized specialist of modern and contemporary art. His early major work was his 1984 book on Cezanne. He has also written on numerous 20th-century artists (Ellsworth Kelly; Donald Judd; Mark Rothko; Barnett Newman; Willem de Kooning; Bridget Riley, Marlene Dumas, Peter Doig, etc.) and is considered a major theorist on contemporary and modern art (Doubt. Theories of Modernism and Postmodernism in the Visual Arts, 2008). His research and scholarship range from theory and criticism to the field of modern art from the early nineteenth century to the contemporary moment.
