A leading expert in the organization of attention and memory in the primate brain. His model of attention (biased competition) explains many of the psychological phenomena of attention in terms of receptive field structure and neuronal organization. His studies of memory storage and retrieval have identified distinct modes of neural responding that involve response suppression of response potentiation.
