Investigator & Scientific Director Emeritus. Made contributions to our understanding of the role of Hox master control genes in patterning the basic body plan of the vertebrate embryo. Helped to establish the structural and regulatory conservation among the Drosophila and mammalian Hox genes. Identified upstream regulators of the Hox genes and established a direct role for retinoic acid in their regulation.
