Research centers on Comparative Literature, in particular the classical tradition of Greek and Latin literature in later European, English and American works. Concentrating on lyric, dramatic and epic forms, his research results in translations from the classics, and his teaching at Princeton University, where he was the founding chair of his department, typically involves the techniques of literary transmission, reception and re-creation.
