Gober is a contemporary sculptor, who also works as a photographer, graphic artist, and curator. Gober's work focuses on familiar domestic objects such as sinks, doors, and legs, with themes of nature, sexuality, religion, and politics. The sculptures are meticulously handcrafted, even when they appear to just be a re-creation of a common sink. He has had numerous solo exhibitions, most notably at the Dia Center for the Arts (New York), The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and Schaulager, Basel. In 2001 he represented the United States at the 49th Venice Biennale. In 2014-15, the Museum of Modern Art presented Robert Gober: The Heart Is Not a Metaphor, a 40-year retrospective of his work including some 130 sculptures, paintings, drawings, prints and photographs.
