Robert H. Brown
Robert Brown, Jr. is a Professor of Neurology, the Donna M. and Robert J. Manning Chair in Neurosciences, vice chair of research in the Department of Neurology, and director of Neurotherapeutics at the UMass Chan Medical School. Brown conducts groundbreaking research into inherited and genetic causes of neurodegenerative and neuromuscular disease.
Brown's research explores the causes of neurodegenerative and neuromuscular disease, particularly amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He and a team of researchers linked ALS to neuron death, identified the first gene associated with the inherited form of ALS, and launched human trials for gene suppression therapies meant to treat the illness.
Brown is a fellow of the National Academy of Medicine.
He received a B.A. in Biophysics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, an M.D. from Harvard Medical School, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Neurophysiology from the University of Oxford.
