Advanced the science of carbon-hydrogen bond activation, discovered dihydrogen bonding, the widely used Crabtree's catalyst, and homogeneous water oxidation catalysts. Showed how molecular recognition catalysts afford diasteroselective C-H bond activation and functionalization. Discovered complexes of molecular hydrogen using new nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation time spectroscopic criteria. Current interest in artificial photosynthesis, nitrogen fixation and energy storage.
