Zimmer was a President of the University of Chicago and a mathematician who worked on ergodic theory, Lie groups and differential geometry which led to important applications. He was a member of the faculty of the University of Chicago for more than two decades before leaving to become Provost of Brown University in 2002. As an institutional leader, he built partnerships and collaborations that extended the reach of science and technology which applied multidisciplinary expertise to complex intellectual, social, and scientific issues.
