Now retired. Professor of Medicine Emeritus, Stanford University now serve on three for-profit corporate boards on several non-profit boards. In past he was Dean of two medical schools (Colorado 1957-1963; Stanford 1965-1970). He served on boards and as an officer of various foundations: Commonwealth Fund (vice president); Kaiser Family Foundation (president and chief executive officer); Lucille P. Markey Charitable Trust (director for medical science trustee); David and Lucille Packard Foundation (trustee); Packard Humanities Institute (trustee), etc.
