Director; Professor of Sociology, Research Professor. Defined intellectually and built institutionally a new scientific and academic field of survey methodology. Was one of the founders of the Joint Program in Survey Methodology at the University of Maryland and the Graduate Program in Survey Methodology at the University of Michigan. Books include Survey Methodology, 2nd edition (2009) and Survey Errors and Survey Costs (1989). Received from the American Association for Public Opinion Research, the 2000 Innovator Award for establishing survey methodology as an academic field, the 2001 Distinguished Achievement Award; from National Association of Business Economists the 2008 Shiskin Award for Economic Statistics; from the World Association for Public Opinion Research the 2009 Helen Dinerman Award; Fellow of American Statistical Association, Midwest Association for Public Opinion Research; elected member, International Statistical Institute. Nominated and confirmed as the Director of the U.S. Census Bureau in 2009.
