Research focuses on classical and quantum aspects of gravitation. Has written a comprehensive monograph on general relativity. Much of his research concerns the theory of black holes---ie., regions of no escape created by the complete gravitational collapse of a body---including the theory of particle creation by black holes and the relationship between the laws of black hole physics and the laws of thermodynamics.
