Robert P. Jones, Ph.D., is the president and founder of Public Religion Research Institute, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization conducting independent research at the intersection of religion, culture, and politics. A New York Times bestselling author, his latest book is Backslide: Reclaiming a Faith and a Nation after the Christian Turn Against Democracy (2026). He is also the author of The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy (2023); White Too Long (2021) which won a 2021 American Book Award; and The End of White Christian America (2017), which won the 2019 Grawemeyer Award in Religion.

He writes regularly for TIME, The Atlantic, Religion News Service, and other outlets. Jones is frequently featured in major national media, such as CNN, MSNBC, NPR, The New York Times, and others. Jones also writes the popular "Redeeming Democracy" weekly newsletter on Substack.

He holds a Ph.D. in religion from Emory University and an M.Div. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
