A leader in discovering the involvement of Wnt signaling in development and cancer. He isolated the first Wnt gene, showed how mouse mammary tumor virus causes cancer by activating the Wnt gene, and has made key discoveries in working out Wnt signal transduction, including the discovery of the Wnt receptor Frizzled. Was the first one to isolate active Wnt proteins, and showed that Wnts are lipid-modifed. Nusse has recently contributed significant insight into the regulation of stem cells in various organs and identified a novel stem cell in the adult liver.
