With the publication of Citizenship and Nationhood in France and Germany (1992), opened up a new field of investigation and analysis that led to widespread research and discussion. Extended research into nationhood and ethnicity with three books examining these issues in the new Eastern Europe. Recipient of a MacArthur fellowship.
