He has pioneered the field of asymmetric catalysis by inventing a series of chiral organometallic catalysts. In particular, his BINAP chemistry allows for efficient synthesis of numerous chiral organic substances of theoretical and practical significance. The efficiency of the asymetric reactions discovered by him rivals or in certain cases even exceeds that of enzymes.
