Made a series of groundbreaking discoveries elucidating mechanisms controlling cell division and cell death. She described the precise pathways linking the DNA replication checkpoint and the mitotic regulator Cdc25, demonstrated how glucose metabolism suppresses the apoptotic protease, caspase 2, identified and determined the mode of action of several anaphase promoting complex inhibitors, and demonstrated novel mechanisms inhibiting apoptosis in cancer cells. Leading scientific/higher education administrator who served as Vice Dean of Basic Science at Duke School of Medicine, currently serving as Provost, Duke University, chaired national/international meetings, and served on multiple review/editorial panels.
