Ralph F. Hirschmann Professor of Chemistry. Studies structure and function in proteins and in unnatural protein-like oligomers (foldamers). Elucidated relationships between size and stability of beta-sheets, and identified new sources of specificity in associations between alpha-helices. Pioneering role in foldamer research, including structural analysis and development of examples with specific biological activities. Recent honors include the 2007 Hirschmann Award in Peptide Chemistry (American Chemical Society) and the 2006 du Vigneaud Award (American Peptide Society).
