Two of Greene's monographs have been recognized in the competition for the Herskovits Prize of the African Studies Association. Her third and fourth monographs stand as ground-breaking analyses of slavery in Africa using never before translated and analyzed texts that detail the perspectives of both the enslaved and slave owners in West Africa.  She has co-edited four compilations of primary source materials on the African slave trade and slavery, an international effort (with participants from the US, Europe, Asia, and Africa) to which she also contributed introductions and essays. As an associate editor of the five-volume New Encyclopedia of Africa, which appeared in 2010, she was a winner of the Conover-Porter Prize for achievement in African Studies. In recognition of her academic accomplishments, she has been elected a life-time member of the Ambrosiana Academy in Milan, Italy, the second oldest library in Europe. Further, she has served as president of the African Studies Association.
