Sandra L. Wolin is Chief of the RNA Biology Laboratory at the Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute and heads the National Cancer Institute’s Initiative in RNA Biology. Her laboratory studies how noncoding RNAs function, how cells recognize and handle defective RNAs, and how failure to degrade these RNAs affects cell function and contributes to human disease. She is specifically interested in the roles of an RNA surveillance protein called Ro60 and its noncoding Y RNA partners in both mammalian cells and bacteria, as well as the ways in which RNA surveillance pathways contribute to normal cell physiology and prevent disease. Wolin earned her M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Yale University, where she was previously a member of the faculty. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Microbiology.
