Perlmutter is a physicist who leads the Supernova Cosmology Project, co-credited with discovering that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating. His group developed new ways to find and study distant supernovae for these cosmology measurements. Current work addresses the nature of the mysterious dark energy causing the Universes acceleration.
