Inventor and biologist, developing new approaches to the imaging of biological structure and function. Contributions include robust gene assays, multispectral confocal microscopy, four-dimensional confocal microscopy permitting imaging of the embryonic heart, molecular imaging reagents, high-sensitivity molecular sensors, and a combined PET-MRI scanner. Developed in toto imaging techniques, which permit direct assays of the development of embryos and organs. Translated novel techniques to clinical applications ranging from degenerative eye diseases to robotic surgery fostering interdisciplinary science. Papers, have appeared in Nature Biotechnology and Development. Co-founder of Caltech's Brain Imaging Center and Kavli Nanoscience Institute.
