An award winning instructor, he currently teaches a rigorous, popular undergraduate course on transdisciplinary modeling. His research focuses on mechanism design and the various roles of diversity plays in social systems. His work has contributed to the establishment of the interdisciplinary field of complex systems. His most cited research demonstrates theoretically how groups made up of people with different perspectives, mindsets, and ways of solving problems, can make more accurate predictions and solve problems more effectively than groups of like minded experts. He has published articles in economics, political science, management, computer science, physics, engineering, public health, geography, and history. He frequently conducts seminars on the importance of diversity to major corporations, government agencies, NGOs, and universities. Serves as a faculty member at the Santa Fe Institute.
