Sergey Fomin is the Richard P. Stanley Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan.

His main research area is combinatorics, especially its applications in algebra, geometry, and other areas of mathematics. Much of his past research was related to cluster algebras, a class of commutative rings endowed with a rich combinatorial structure. His research interests also included algebraic and enumerative combinatorics, computational complexity, incidence geometry, and probability theory.

Fomin has been at the University of Michigan since 1999. Previously, he held positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1992-2000), St. Petersburg Institute for Informatics and Automation (1991-2005), and St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University (1982-1991).

Fomin received his MSc in 1979 and his Ph.D. in 1982 from St. Petersburg State University.
