Sergey Fomin is the Robert M. Thrall Collegiate Professor of Mathematics and Associate Chair for Graduate Studies in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Michigan. 

His main research area is combinatorics, especially its applications in algebra, geometry, and other areas of mathematics. Much of his past research was related to cluster algebras, a class of commutative rings endowed with a rich combinatorial structure.

He has been at the University of Michigan since 1999. Previously, he held positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1992 to 2000, at the St. Petersburg Institute for Informatics and Automation of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and at the Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University. 

Fomin received his M.Sc. in 1979 and his Ph.D in 1982 from St. Petersburg State University.
