Sergey Gavrilets is a theoretical biologist who uses mathematical models to study complex evolutionary processes. The hallmark of his work is close collaboration with empiricists to test his theories. His 2004 Monograph developed a general mathematical theory for the origin of species formalizing Darwinian arguments. Gavrilets has also made major contributions to the theoretical studies of phenotypic plasticity, genetic variation, fitness landscapes, coevolution, and sexual conflict. Gavrilets was honored with a Guggenheim fellowship in 2008. His more recent work focuses on human origins, social evolution, social complexity, collective action, and cliodynamics - the emerging transdisciplinary science of quantitative history.
