Over the past four decades, Justice Sotomayor has worked in nearly every level of the judicial system. She started her career in the New York District Attorney's Office. She moved to private practice, which she supplemented with visible public service pro bono roles. In 1992 she was appointed to the District Court for the Southern District of New York, and in 1997, to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. During her tenure on the second circuit, she was also an adjunct professor at NYU and Columbia. In 2009, she became the first Latina Supreme Court Justice.
