Professor Speros Vryonis Jr. is a historian whose research focuses on Byzantine, Balkan, and Greek history. Formerly, he served as Professor Emeritus of History at the University of California, Alexander S. Onassis Professor of Hellenic Culture and Civilization and Director of the Alexander S. Onassis Center for Hellenic Studies, and Director of the Speros Basil Vryonis Center for the Study of Hellenism. Professor Vryonis is the author of many books and numerous articles in scholarly journals. His most recent book is the monumental The Mechanism of Catastrophe—The Turkish Pogrom of September 6-7, 1955 and the Destruction of the Greek Community of Istanbul.
