Ikenberry served as President of the University of Illinois from 1979 through 1995 and again as interim President in 2010. Following his initial tenure at Illinois he a moved to Washington, D.C. in 1996 to serve as President of the American Council on Education. He currently serves as professor/president emeritus of the University of Illinois and is co-principal investigator of the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment. Prior to the University of Illinois, he had positions at Michigan State, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania State University.
