Leading Romanticist. Author of two groundbreaking books on Shelley, which helped restore the poet's place in literary history. Editor of the Johns Hopkins definitive Shelley edition (in progress), editor of novels by Mary Shelley, and editor of Charlotte Smith and other female writers of the eighteenth century. Expert on Romantic poetic genres. Served as longtime editor of the Keats-Shelley journal. His work with American students in Italy, studying Romantic relationships in the time of Keats and Byron, is exemplary.
