Dr. Hubbard is a the Deputy Laboratory Director for Science and Technology at Oak Ridge National Lab. In this role, she guides one of the nation’s most extensive research and development portfolios, which spans computing and computational sciences, materials science, environmental and biological research, energy science and technology, isotope research and development, fission and fusion energy, neutron sciences, and national security sciences. Susan’s own research focuses on quantifying the organization and function of terrestrial systems, with a particular emphasis on using geophysical methods to explore how hydrological, geochemical and biological processes interact to govern larger scale system behavior. Her approaches to combine extraordinarily diverse datasets are used to gain new insights about the behavior of terrestrial systems and their role in governing our water availability, sequestering carbon, supporting agriculture, and controlling contaminant fate and transport. She earned her PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley and her MS in Geophysics at Virginia Tech. Prior joining Berkeley Lab, she was an Associate Laboratory Director at Berkeley Lab, a geologist at the US Geological Survey and a geophysicist in industry. Susan is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), a Fellow of the Geological Society of America (GSA),  a recipient of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Frank Frischknecht Award and the SEG Hal Mooney Award, and a GSA Birdsall Dreiss Distinguished Lecturer. Susan has served on many scientific advisory and editorial boards.
