Her research has had a major impact on immunology and cancer. Together with Jerry Adams, she demonstrated that antibody genes undergo genetic recombination, thereby creating much greater diversity with which to fight infection. They also showed this process can go awry, causing chromosome translocations which activate oncogenes and provoke leukemia/lymphoma.
