Bennington College, Bennington, Vermont ~Essayist; Literary Critic; Director, Bennington Writing Seminars. Known for book The Gutenberg Elegies (1994), which posits a decline in reading due to the overwhelming advances of the Internet and other technologies of electronic culture. Has served as Editor of AGNI, an American literary magazine, since 2002. Publications include The Other Walk (2011), a book of memoir-essays, Art of Time in Memoir: Then, Again (2007), and Reading Life: Books for the Ages (2007). Received the Citation for Excellence in Reviewing from the National Book Critics Circle (1985) and the pen/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for best book of essays (1990). Reviews appear regularly in The New York Times Book Review, The New Republic, Esquire, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Mirabella, Parnassus, The Yale Review, and other publications. Taught writing at Harvard University, Emerson College, Amherst College, and Mount Holyoke College.~~
