Professor Svetlana Jitomirskaya is a Professor of Mathematics at UC Irvine. Her research focuses on mathematical physics and dynamical systems. The theory of almost periodic Schrödinger operators is a subtle and deep subject that has captured the imagination of many mathematicians including Avila, Bourgain, and Simon. One particular model called the almost Mathieu equations has itself produced dozens of papers in the top four mathematics journals. Jitomirskaya through her research contributions has established herself as a leader in this area including three Annals papers on the almost Mathieu operators. The first opened up the field of nonperturbative localization, the second solved a 30 year old conjecture, and the third opened the field of sharp arithmetic spectral transitions.
